Who was Douglas Adams?
Douglas Noel Adams (1952-2001) was a British author, scriptwriter, and essayist best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a 1979 comedy-science-fiction radio series that became a series of five novels, a TV adaptation, a feature film, and several stage adaptations. Adams also co-wrote episodes of Doctor Who and wrote the Dirk Gently detective novels. He was an outspoken advocate of environmental causes, particularly the Campaign to Save the Rhino.
Adams died on May 11, 2001, in Santa Barbara, California. Towel Day was first observed in 2001, two weeks after his death, and has been marked annually since.
Why a towel?
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy describes the towel as "the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." The Guide notes that a towel has immense psychological value if one knows how to use it: it can be used for warmth, as a pillow, for signalling, for sun protection, for a sail, for wrapping delicate items, for waving at approaching aircraft, and - most importantly - as evidence that the bearer knows where their towel is.
How to observe Towel Day
Fans mark Towel Day by carrying a towel through the day, posting photos on social media under #TowelDay, hosting Hitchhiker's Guide read-aliases, and revisiting the novels or the 1981 BBC TV adaptation. Bookshops and libraries sometimes organise Hitchhiker's themed events. The official Towel Day website publishes events and a list of participating venues worldwide.
Related observances

The Guide beyond towels
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy introduced several other concepts that have entered common cultural usage, including the number 42 (the answer to the "Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything"), the Babel Fish (a universal translator), and the Infinite Improbability Drive. Towel Day is sometimes observed alongside other Hitchhiker's Guide references; 42 is a common search- term spike around Towel Day.
The series has been adapted as a 1981 BBC television series, a 1984 interactive text adventure game (one of the first graphical adventure games), a 2005 feature film, and multiple stage adaptations. The Douglas Adams Memorial Lecture and the annual Hitchhiker's Guide Day (March 21) supplement Towel Day observances.
