The one-line summary
National public holiday on November 10, observed every year. Commemorates the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, the first major engagement of the Indonesian National Revolution. Secular memorial category, standard tier.
Origin
Indonesian Heroes Day was established by President Soekarno in 1956, eleven years after the Battle of Surabaya. The 1945 battle had become the foundational narrative of the Indonesian National Revolution, particularly because of Bung Tomo\'s radio speeches rallying the Arek Corps and the symbolic image of Indonesian civilians confronting British armoured cars in the streets of Surabaya.
The 1945 Battle of Surabaya took place in the aftermath of the Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945, and the proclamation of Indonesian independence on August 17. British forces arrived in Java and Sumatra as part of the Allied occupation to disarm the Japanese; tensions escalated between British and Indonesian republican forces in September-November 1945. The British-Indian troops in Surabaya clashed repeatedly with the republican militia.
On November 10, 1945, the British commander Brigadier A.W.S. Mallaby had already been killed (October 30); his replacement issued an ultimatum to the republican side to surrender. The ultimatum was refused; a three-week urban battle followed. Indonesian forces eventually withdrew from the city under heavy bombardment, but the resistance became a rallying point for international sympathy and accelerated diplomatic recognition of Indonesian sovereignty.
When it falls
November 10, every year. Heroes Day is a fixed Gregorian date and does not move. The date is anchored on the anniversary of the British ultimatum that triggered the 1945 battle.
How it is observed
The national ceremony is held at the Taman Pahlawan Nasional (National Heroes Cemetery) in Surabaya, the site of the original battle. The president or senior officials lay wreaths at the cemetery and deliver addresses. Flags are flown at half-mast throughout the country.
Regional governments honour local heroes in parallel ceremonies. Schools hold flag ceremonies at half-mast and often organise essay contests and historical study sessions about the Battle of Surabaya. Veterans\' organisations host commemorative gatherings.
The day is also a focal point for civic education. School textbooks dedicate substantial coverage to the Battle of Surabaya and to Bung Tomo\'s radio speeches, which are often memorised and recited in school assemblies.
Regional variations
Heroes Day is observed uniformly across Indonesia as a national holiday. The provincial ceremonies vary in their emphasis: East Java (Surabaya) and East Kalimantan (Balikpapan) are particularly significant battle sites and host larger commemorations. Other regions emphasise local heroes (regional commanders, intellectuals, religious leaders) who contributed to the national revolution.
Legal status
Heroes Day is one of sixteen libur nasional (national public holidays) recognised under Keputusan Presiden Nomor 24 Tahun 2016 (Presidential Decree No. 24 of 2016) on Hari Libur Nasional dan Cuti Bersama. The day has been observed continuously since 1956. Banks, government offices, and most schools close on November 10.
Where it is contested
Heroes Day is not politically contested in any significant way. The narrative of Bung Tomo and the Arek Corps is broadly accepted as a founding myth of Indonesian independence. Some historians have questioned the strategic effectiveness of the republican resistance in 1945, arguing that the Battle of Surabaya was a tactical defeat; this view is held by a small minority and is not reflected in the official observance.
The broader history of the Indonesian National Revolution (1945-1949) includes darker chapters, including the killings of alleged Dutch collaborators and the imprisonment of political opponents in the early republican period. Heroes Day focuses on the resistance against British and Dutch forces rather than on the internal conflicts.
