The one-line summary

Chinese National Day on October 1 marks the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The day kicks off the 7-day National Day Golden Week, the largest annual domestic travel and consumer event in the world.

The 1949 proclamation

On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from the Tiananmen Gate in Beijing, ending the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949) between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang (KMT). The proclamation followed the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War in September 1949, when the KMT government had retreated to Taiwan. The new People's Republic was recognised immediately by the Soviet Union and over the following months by most other socialist states; recognition by the United Kingdom and the United States would not come until 1950 (UK) and the 1970s (US, after Nixon's 1972 visit).

Origin and history

For the first three decades of the People's Republic (1949-1979), National Day was the centerpiece of Chinese political life, with massive military parades in Tiananmen Square every 10th anniversary (1959, 1969, 1979) and smaller observances in intervening years. The 1984 parade marked the beginning of the reform era. Major parades continued in 1999 (50th anniversary, with Jiang Zemin) and 2009 (60th anniversary, with Hu Jintao). In 2019, the 70th anniversary parade featured Xi Jinping and a major military display. The economic reforms of the late 1970s shifted the focus of National Day from political demonstration to consumer activity, with the Golden Week becoming the dominant feature of the holiday.

The Golden Week

The Golden Week (国庆黄金周) was first established in 1999 to extend the National Day holiday by combining it with the adjacent weekend and shifting some of the Spring Festival holidays. The October Golden Week runs October 1-7 and the Spring Festival Golden Week runs roughly the same length around Lunar New Year. Together the two Golden Weeks account for a large share of China's annual domestic tourism and consumer spending. In 2024, the National Day Golden Week generated an estimated 800 million domestic trips and over $100 billion in tourism-related spending.

The Tiananmen flag-raising

The day begins with a flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square, attended by the President, Premier, and other senior officials, with the public invited to attend. The ceremony is broadcast live on CCTV and is the principal symbolic event of the holiday. The flag is raised at sunrise to the national anthem (March of the Volunteers) and lowered at sunset; the discipline of the ceremony is itself a tourist draw.

How National Day is observed

A major flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square on the morning of October 1, attended by top government officials; an evening gala broadcast on CCTV; patriotic decorations and posters in cities; the 7-day Golden Week holiday during which hundreds of millions of Chinese travel domestically (the largest annual human migration in the world); tourism peaks at major destinations; consumer spending peaks; family gatherings. Smaller observances occur on October 2 and 3.

National Day is a statutory public holiday in mainland China (October 1-3 are the official public holidays, with October 4-7 making up the 7-day Golden Week when combined with the adjacent weekend). Hong Kong observes October 1 as a public holiday; Macau does the same. The holiday is observed but not as a public holiday in Taiwan (where Double Ten Day on October 10 is the national day). It is observed by Chinese cultural organizations worldwide.

Where it is contested

Discussions centre on three principal areas. First, the economic cost of the Golden Week, which strains transport infrastructure and produces severe crowding at major tourist destinations; the Chinese government has periodically adjusted the holiday calendar to relieve pressure. Second, the role of the military parades in signalling foreign policy positions (the 2019 parade coincided with trade tensions with the United States). Third, the contrast between National Day on the mainland (October 1) and the Republic of China's National Day on Taiwan (October 10), which is observed separately on each side of the Taiwan Strait.

In other countries

National Day is observed by Chinese communities and by Chinese diplomatic missions worldwide. The flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square is broadcast on CCTV and reaches most Chinese-language media around the world. Chinese embassies and consulates host receptions on October 1; the festivities are cultural and consular rather than public holidays.

History of Chinese National Day

Chinese National Day on October 1 commemorates the 1949 proclamation of the People's Republic of China by Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The proclamation marked the end of the Chinese Civil War and the establishment of the Communist government in mainland China.

The day is the centre of China's "Golden Week," a seven-day public holiday from October 1 to 7. The week is one of the busiest travel periods in China, with millions of Chinese citizens travelling for domestic tourism and family reunions.

Golden Week

Golden Week features patriotic celebrations, consumer sales, and tourism. Major tourist sites including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and other landmarks see peak attendance. The week is also a major consumer shopping period.

China has experimented with splitting the holiday week to relieve pressure on tourism infrastructure, and some workers now have additional Spring Festival holiday time to compensate. The pattern of Golden Week celebrations remains a defining feature of Chinese National Day.
